Funny Face

I want to start featuring films that I find stylistically appealing/inspiring. Funny Face (1957) is a musical that I find inspiring and pleasantly enjoyable to watch. Of course this is no surprise since the plot is centered around a major fashion magazine. I don’t want to do a whole plot summary since this is a well known classic film. So, here are some of my favorite looks.

One of the opening numbers is “Think Pink” where Maggie Prescott, the editor of Quality magazine, decides to tell all women everywhere that pink is the new “in” color they should all be wearing. My favorite thing about it is that while she is telling everyone else to wear pink she clearly wont wear any pink herself. She is a woman who cannot be swayed by trends, even ones that she creates! Apparently this character is partially based on legendary editor Diana Vreeland who is one of my personal style heroes.

This look is from one of the shoots they work on while in Paris. The last three are all from the fashion show that Jo does for a famous European designer while in Paris.

Mixing Prints

I’ve been trying to diversify my outfits more lately. At least half of my clothes are black and I want to get away from wearing so much of it. I think that mixing prints (or colors) is one of the best ways to do that and it gives an unexpected twist to an outfit. It is also a great way to push the boundaries of the fashion norm without veering off into strange silhouettes and unflattering shapes. I mean, I am all for experimental fashion but I don’t want children asking “Mommy what is that?” when I walk by! So, for me anyway, mixing prints and colors is the best way to push my personal boundaries. Here is an outfit which I put together to mix prints.

Opening Day!

I’m not a huge sports person but I love the Red Sox. Today is opening day so I thought I’d do a little supplementary post. The Sox are playing the Rangers and my brother is a die-hard Rangers fan so we have a little family feud going on!  Here’s a little trip down memory lane with a few pictures of me at Red Sox games (all at Fenway) over the years. At some point I plan on doing a post on how people manage to look stylish at a sporting event because it is not easy to look good and sport all that gear to cheer for your team!

I Made This!

I love to make things myself, it really gives me a sense of satisfaction. So I am going to try to feature things I make every week. This will also challenge me to make more things! Below is an infinity scarf that I recently finished knitting. I chose a merino wool and cashmere blend yarn to make it soft and warm. The slate gray color is neutral enough to go with everything, which is why I chose it, but for my next scarf I want to do something colorful.

In these pictures I have the scarf doubled up but it can also be tripled to make it closer to the neck (and thus warmer) or drawn up over the top of the head as a kind of hood/scarf combo. I’m pretty happy with it! I used a knitting loom to make this (ordered off of amazon) which is much easier than knitting needles in my opinion. I first learned about knitting looms from this post on What I Wore. I am going to make another scarf next but after that who knows…maybe I’ll go crazy and try a hat?

Dinner Date

This is an outfit I wore out to dinner. I am experimenting with places to take pictures and I like these better than my previous ones but my lighting skills still need work. I’ll keep practicing! I love lace, so when I found this lace top (it’s silk!) at Forever 21 I was shocked at how nice it was. It is shorter and wider than most of the tops I tend to wear but it is so pretty I bought it anyway and I think it can be worn in many ways. I particularly like that the shape and neckline on the top are demure but the sheer lace makes it sexy. That kind of tension in a garment or outfit is one of the things I love the most about fashion.
