I Made This!

Here is my slightly delayed second “I made this” post. I did not get around to finishing anything I made last week so I skipped posting one for a week (I’ll try to be better!). I made this dress out of a T shirt as part of a collaboration with clothing company FG Apparel . It is not perfect but I am pretty proud of it for being my first attempt at making this dress!

I Want…For Spring/Summer

I have always had a problem dressing for spring and summer. I am much more of a tights, boots, dark colors kind of girl. However, this year I am determined to change that and put together a decent (and cheap) warm weather wardrobe. So, here are some items that show what kind of look I am going for this summer. I will probably not end up buying most of these exact items they are more for inspiration and to keep me focused on a certain look when I go shopping. The first set has the clothes I like and the second has all the accessories.

Sunday Brunch

I just got back from a little trip to Corvallis this weekend. I am trying to tie up loose ends and see everyone around here as I will be moving again in a few weeks (more details on that later). So, I don’t have any pictures from this weekend to show and instead I will post pictures of what I wore last Sunday to brunch with my friend Sarah. This is a fairly casual outfit for me but I always think Sunday brunch is supposed to be casual.

Dying for a Change

2010 was in most ways a terrible year for me. I was in no way sorry to see it go. It’s funny, when I look back at the year I realize that my dissatisfaction manifested itself through my constant change in hair color. I worked at a salon where I met many wonderful people but also where many people had their opinions on what I (and specifically my hair) should look like. I believe that hair is definitely an accessory and can be just as important to someone’s over all look and what they are trying to say about themselves as any article of clothing. Unfortunately I was feeling so unsure of myself that I let other people influence how I thought I should look. Thus, at different points in 2010, I had brown hair (both natural and dyed), blonde hair, and red hair. Prior to this I had never really thought about dying my hair, it just did not interested me. I really think that I was subconsciously trying to tell myself that I was unhappy and needed a change but of course hair color can’t solve problems! Now that it is all said and done I have this real longing to go back to my natural brown hair. At the moment, the red that I had has faded to light(ish) brown and is growing out. I don’t mind this for the spring/summer and since the grown out (or ombre) look is popular now I am just soooo hip. Come fall however it is back to natural brown for me! Like I said, I think hair is relevant to personal style which is why I have dedicated a post to it…that and I love my hair now, no matter what color it is! Below are pictures of me with all 3 hair colors.

Quality vs Quantity

I have this debate with myself almost every time I look at my closet. Is it better to own many cheap clothes or fewer, more expensive, but well made clothes? A few years ago I might have said that it is much better to have a closet full of H&M, Forever 21, etc, as long as they look good, because it gives you more options for less money. Besides what fashion lover doesn’t want more clothes right? Why buy one dress when you can get five for the price of that one? Well, now I have come to the realization that none of these clothes feel special. Don’t get me wrong, I like a lot of them quite a bit but now I have a closet full of ordinary cheap clothes! Most of which I will not still own in 10 years, which seems like a waste of money. Plus, I have ended up with many similar items. I think I have 30 black dresses (no exaggeration) and probably 20 of those are of a jersey material…that is absolutely ridiculous! Have I actually worn all of them? I don’t even know. Anyway, my point is that I am trying to make the conscious effort to buy fewer items and make the ones that I do buy of a higher quality. I recently bought a few nicer things, one of which is the dress below.
